What to Expect When Getting Your Wisdom Tooth Removed

Wisdom teeth usually erupt in the jaws, between 17 to 25 years of age and there are various reasons as to why an adult may require the removal of these wisdom teeth.
Once your dentist has diagnosed the condition and has advised a wisdom tooth extraction, there are a few things that you need to know before you undergo the procedure. Like,

- You have to inform the oral surgeon about any health issues or medications that you might be taking.
- It is advisable to take an off from school, college, or work on the day the procedure is scheduled.
- Request your surgeon if the procedure can be scheduled during the morning hours and do have a good and filling breakfast.
- The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, wherein you might feel numb on your lips, tongue, and cheek during the procedure and for a few hours even after it.

- The surgeon may have to cut a part of your gum or bone in order to remove the tooth in case the tooth is stuck inside the bone. In such a case, you might even have a stitch or two given on the gum. If the stitches are not resorbable, you will have to visit your dentist, a week later to have the stitches removed.
- Most of the patients are alert enough to go back home on their own after the completion of the tooth removal procedure. However, for the few who do feel a little weak and may have a family member or a friend to escort them home.
- The surgeon will stuff some piece of gauze in your mouth in the area where the tooth has been removed to control the bleeding.
- On the day of the procedure, do eat only once the numbness has withered away. You are not expected to eat or drink any hot food or beverages on the same day.
- You need to exercise caution while brushing and avoid the use of a straw or spit frequently as doing this may dislodge the blood clot and give rise to bleeding.
- You may be prescribed certain antibiotics and pain killer drugs in order to prevent post-operative discomfort.
- Swelling is most likely to develop in the area, which may subside in the next 48 to 72 hours and should not be a cause of worry.
