Dental crowns restore worn, discoloured, or weakened teeth by covering enamel and dentin defects. They improve appearance while correcting developmental defects, restoring strength and a comfortable bite for everyday use.
When a Tooth Weakens, It Starts to Impact Your Daily Life
Cracks, chips, or deep decay don’t stay limited to one spot; it spreads, causing pain, sensitivity, difficulty chewing, and sudden breakage. Without realizing it, you may avoid smiling freely or chewing comfortably. A crown restores the tooth’s appearance and strength, helping everyday actions feel effortless again.
When a tooth looks worn, discoloured, or fragile, it can quietly affect how comfortable you feel smiling or eating. You may start favouring one side or being conscious of that tooth without realising it.
A dental crown, also called a tooth cap, is a custom-made covering placed over such a tooth to restore its shape, strength, and natural appearance. Clinically, it protects the tooth from further damage and helps maintain a stable bite, allowing it to function like a healthy tooth again.
Ideal for people who have:
Cracked, chipped or fractured teeth
Deeply damaged or decayed teeth
Weakened teeth after RCT
Discoloured tooth because of developmental defects
Worn-down or eroded teeth
Large fillings that no longer support the tooth
Your dentist will evaluate the tooth with X-rays and clinical checks to determine the most suitable crown type based on durability, chewing load, and natural appearance.

Fillings work well for small, early-stage cavities, but they do not reinforce a tooth that has lost significant structure. When decay is extensive, the tooth is cracked, or the nerve has been treated, a filling can leave the remaining tooth vulnerable to fracture, repeated decay, or failure under chewing pressure. In such cases, a dental crown provides full coverage and long-term protection that a filling cannot.
Our dentists recommend the right crown based on where the tooth is, how much chewing pressure it handles, and how you want it to look and feel.

Digital scanners have transformed the way modern dental crowns are designed and fitted. Traditional moulds with thick impression material that often feel uncomfortable and trigger gagging are rapidly being replaced by fast, precise 3D digital scans. Today, digital scanning technology allows dentists to capture highly accurate impressions of the tooth and surrounding bite within minutes, making the crown process far more comfortable and predictable for patients.
Without digital scanners, it becomes difficult to achieve the same level of precision in crown fit, bite alignment, and overall aesthetics. A poorly fitting crown can lead to discomfort, food lodgement, bite imbalance, gum irritation, or even early crown failure over time. Digital scanning helps dentists design crowns with significantly greater accuracy, ensuring a more natural fit and better long-term performance.
At Clove Dental, advanced digital scanning and CAD/CAM technology are used to improve treatment planning, crown precision, and patient comfort. In modern restorative dentistry, digital scanners are no longer just an upgrade, they have become essential for delivering high-quality, long-lasting dental crowns.

Common questions about Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a custom tooth-shaped cap that fully covers a damaged, decayed, or structurally weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns are most commonly placed after root canal treatment, for teeth with large fillings, cracked cusps, fractured cusps, or as the visible restoration on top of a dental implant.
Clove Dental offers different types of dental crowns based on the tooth location, strength requirements, and aesthetic needs. These include metal crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns, full ceramic crowns, and zirconia crowns. Your dentist recommends the most suitable option after evaluating your tooth condition, bite, and cosmetic expectations.
Zirconia is a high-strength ceramic oxide material that closely mimics the colour, translucency, and light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. Unlike PFM crowns, zirconia has no metal substructure, eliminating the dark gum margin line that becomes visible as gums recede with age. Zirconia crowns are milled using CAD/CAM technology for precise fit and are the most popular crown choice at Clove Dental.
Two appointments. At the first, the tooth is prepared (shaped to accommodate the crown), a digital impression or physical impression is taken, and a temporary crown is placed. Five to seven days later, the permanent crown is fitted on the prepared tooth, adjusted for precise bite alignment, and cemented permanently. In-house CAD/CAM at select clinics can deliver same-day crowns.
No. Tooth preparation for a crown is performed under local anaesthesia, the procedure is painless. Mild temperature sensitivity and pressure sensitivity after the anaesthesia wears off is normal for a few days. If sensitivity worsens, persists beyond one week, or is accompanied by spontaneous pain, contact Clove Dental, the tooth may require further assessment before the permanent crown is placed.
In most cases, yes. Root canal treatment helps save the natural tooth by removing infection from inside it. However, teeth that require RCT are often already weakened due to deep decay or damage. A dental crown helps restore strength, protect the tooth from cracking, and allow it to function normally while chewing. Dentists at Clove Dental usually recommend placing the crown within a few weeks after completing RCT for long-term protection.
Real smiles, real stories. Here's what our patients love about their CLOVE Dental experience!
Keep your crowns strong, secure, and long-lasting with a few simple daily habits.
Brush and floss regularly to prevent plaque build-up around crown edges and maintain gum health.
Limit chewing very hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that can loosen or damage crowns over time.
If you clench or grind, use a night guard. It reduces pressure and prevents cracks or wear on your crown.
Regular dental visits ensure your crown stays well-fitted and your natural tooth remains healthy.
