You must have heard Benjamin Franklin’s age-old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Yes, this quote applies to every aspect of life, especially oral health. A small black spot on your teeth or minor bleeding in your gums while brushing may be the cause of something bigger. Want to know how? Read more about this in the following blog!

As we start with our newly launched campaign, “Fix It or Lose It, let’s read more about the five most common dental issues and how to detect and prevent them from an early stage.

1. Cavities

Decay of teeth/cavities is one of the most prevalent dental issues that almost everyone experiences. Tooth decay happens when a film of bacteria sticks to the tooth and starts producing acids, which cause tooth decay.

This can lead to enamel loss (the tooth’s protective layer), eventually leading to a dental cavity.

Signs and symptoms that you have a cavity:

  • Visible Hole
  • Blackish discoloration
  • Sensitivity
  • Persistent Pain

Prevention of Cavities:

  • Gargle after every meal, so food doesn’t stick to teeth.
  • Have a brushing routine, including Brushing, Flossing, and mouthwash
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Avoid eating too many sweet and soft drinks
  • Always use a straw while having sugary drinks.
  • Go for regular dental checkups.

2. Periodontal/Gum Disease

Gum disease, i.e., infection and inflammation surrounding the areas of your teeth, can lead to more significant problems. Our gums sometimes start bleeding, and we usually ignore it, which should be done.

Gum disease usually starts with Gingivitis, in which the symptoms include:

  • Red/ Swollen Gums
  • Bleeding while Brushing
  • Mouth Sores
  • Bad Breath

If not treated in time, Gingivitis can lead to Periodontitis, leading to tooth loss.

Gum Disease can be prevented by:

  • Proper oral hygiene
  • Regular brushing
  • Flossing
  • Professional cleanings.

Treatment may involve deep cleaning procedures, antibiotics, or, in advanced cases, surgery.

3. Sensitivity of Tooth

Do you feel uncomfortable when you eat something hot, cold, or sour? This can be a sign of tooth sensitivity,

Tooth Sensitivity is caused by the wearing of the outside layer of the tooth, known as enamel. The wearing off of the enamel exposes tooth roots, thus creating an uncomfortable sensation.

Treatment for tooth sensitivity can include:

  • Desensitizing toothpaste
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Dental procedures like bonding or gum grafts can help alleviate discomfort and strengthen tooth enamel.

4. Toothaches

Persistent toothache should never be ignored since it could be a sign of:

  • Infection
  • Decay
  • Abscess
  • Gum disease
  • Impaction

Over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses provide temporary relief, but seeing a dentist as soon as possible is essential to address the underlying issue before it worsens.

5. Oral Cancer

While less common than other dental problems, oral cancer is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition that requires early detection and treatment.

Symptoms to look out for:

  • Persistent mouth sores
  • Lumps
  • Thickening in the mouth or neck
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Persistent hoarseness.

Regular dental exams include screenings for oral cancer, and early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes.
