Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers

These are small lesions, painful to the individual, that develop inside the mouth. While these do not require special attention and usually cure by themselves within a week or ten days, soreness and discomfort associated with these may cause some problems. Here are some home remedies which may help alleviate the pain and enhance the process of healing:

  • Salt Water Gargle: Gargling relieves the ulcer and permits it to heal. Mix one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and gargle frequently.
  • Honey Apply a thin layer of honey to the ulcer. Honey is antibacterial in nature; thus, it cleans up the sore and eventually brings down inflammation, protecting the sore.
  • Coconut Oil: Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties that help kill the pain of mouth ulcers. Apply a small amount directly to the sore several times daily.
  • Aloe Vera: Composed with anti-irritating properties, aloe vera soothes any discomfort by applying thin layers of aloe vera gel gently directly to the ulcer.
  • Baking Soda Paste: Mix with water, apply directly on the ulcer. This shall help in neutralizing the acidity and shall lower inflammation.
  • Chamomile Tea: Brew some, let it cool down, and use it for mouthwash. Yes, read that right, it has anti-inflammatory properties that in some measure could be added to healing the mouth ulcers.
  • Avoid Irritants: One should avoid spicy or acidic foods and rough or crunchy foods, as they may only further irritate the ulcer. Take a break from these foods until your ulcer heals.
  • Vitamin Supplements: Deficiencies of some vitamins, the B-complex group, and iron and zinc may also account for the cause behind mouth ulcers sometimes. Taking supplements or eating foods rich in these nutrients will help prevent such.

Note: If the ulcers continue to stay for more than two weeks, keep coming back again and again, or are associated with high fever or difficulty in swallowing food, it’s quite pertinent to visit a doctor. Although home remedies act on the sores, they just cannot replace a medical diagnosis and its consequent therapy.
