Let us know about different treatment modalities involved in teeth whitening.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening comes under cosmetic dental procedures. They work on discoloured or stained teeth to enhance the appeal of your smile.

It involves two methods – professional teeth whitening methods, or teeth whitening treatment done at home. In teeth whitening, peroxide-based bleaching agents like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are used to whiten your smile. The concentration differs according to the methods used.

Types of teeth whitening procedures

  • In-office teeth whitening: Teeth whitening procedure done by a professional at a dental clinic is in-office teeth whitening. The amount of peroxide used is usually 15% to 43%. It is higher than the peroxide levels used in home techniques. In-office techniques ensure faster and long-lasting results. Robust bleaching agents, with heat and light, a combination of all these speed up and intensify the whitening process to a much greater extent. In-office visits produce dramatic results, heavily stained and discolored teeth may reach your desired shades in-office visits. In some cases, it might take more than one appointment to reach your desired shade, depending on the severity of the stains.
  • At-home teeth whitening methods: This is the option for people who want to do teeth whitening at their convenience at home. Many options are available, like custom take-home trays, whitening gels, whitening toothpaste, whitening strips, etc. Custom take-home trays are fabricated for an individual. Upper and lower jaw impressions are made, and customized trays are fabricated. The level of peroxide is much lower in-home teeth whitening kits. So it usually takes a much longer time to get to the desired results. The bleaching agent used is very mild, so it does not produce efficient results on the heavy stained and discolored teeth. Thus, visit the dental clinic.
